Dysartian
St Serfs Tower in the Mist
Today it isn't misty, its beautiful sunshine and I will be manning the top of the tower between 12:00 to 17:00 hrs. Its Kirkcaldy Doors Open Day and the one day of the year when the 80 ft high tower with its panoramic views of Dysart and the Firth of Forth, is open to the public. This is one of only two remaining Scottish church towers which had gun loops. Their purpose was to command gunfire onto the beach below, as defence against English pirates and American privateers like John Paul Jones (who terrorised the East coast of Scotland). If you come to Dysart today, you can visit the tower, the Harbourmasters House with historic and interactive displays (and cafe) the harbour next to the tower, Dysart Tolbooth with lots of historical photos and other items showing the Saut Burgh's industrial and maritime history. Alternatively you can visit Dysart Church with its rediscovered Charles Rennie Macintosh murals, or Kirkcaldy Art club. Round the corner from the tower, is partially ruined Ravenscraig Castle (one of the first royal castles specifically built to withstand cannon fire). In central KIrkcaldy there are also many buildings open for visits, the Central Police Station, Harbour House, Town House, Fire Station etc. So why not head this way in the sunshine, as this could be the last sunny weekend before winter closes in?.
