Iron Staining in Fife Carboniferous Sandstones

There is natural beauty everywhere and people walk past this beauty in their humdrum daily lives, without ever noticing it. So it is with these rocks, which are a combination of structuration and iron-staining, with no two panels of God's natural art looking the same. This type of pattern is called liesegang banding, is post-depositional and it cuts across bedding planes.

A print of this photo got into the final 20 selected for the first ever Geology of Fife competition and now appears in the program for St Andrew's 'On the Rocks ' Festival. The photo was chosen to illustrate the 'Fife's Rock Art' photographic exhibition (albeit it was printed upside-down and slightly stretched) which runs from 17th-30th April 2011, at the Byre Theatre, St Andrews. I hope to take our visitors to see St Andrews and the exhibition.
