Doune Castle (Camelot, Swamp Castle and Castle Anthrax in Monty Python)
Doune Castle is an imposing mediaeval castle sited on a tree-lined river bend near the Stirlingshire village of Doune. It is one of the best-preserved medieval castles in Scotland, and is undoubtedly the finest late 14th century castle in Scotland. The site is defended on three sides by the ground sloping steeply down to the rivers, whilst the approach from the north, is defended by earthworks. There is a superb view in every direction from the battlements.
The castle was built in the 14th century for Robert Stewart, Duke of Albany, who ruled all of Scotland while King James I was held captive in England. After Robert’s death the castle, and the regency of Scotland, passed to his son Duke Murdoch.
In 1424 the king returned from exile. Not long after this, Murdoch was arrested and executed along with his sons – James I believed the duke and his father had done too little to secure his release. Doune Castle was confiscated by the Crown and was used as a royal hunting lodge.
Doune Castle appears numerous times in Monty Python and the Holy Grail notably as Camelot, the Castle of Guy de Lombard (with Trojan Rabbit), Swamp Castle where Sir Lancelot causes chaos at the wedding, and Castle Anthrax where Sir Galahad has an interesting offer!
The scenes of the army of King Arthur drawn up for battle at the end of Monty Python and the Holy Grail were filmed near Bridge of Allen close to Dumyat Hill. Many of the extras playing the troops were students from the nearby University of Stirling.
