Perhaps the Most Scenic Lay-by in Scotland

The stretch of Scotland's A9 road, from Dunkeld past Pitlochry to Aviemore, is surrounded by beautiful scenery. There are mountains, meandering rivers, old forgotten bridges over quaint streams, a large white-painted distillery at Dalwhinnie and ruins of castles and crofter's cottages. There are also lots of conveniently sited lay-bys where you can can park-up and take photos. This particular lay-by is directly opposite the picturesque ruins of historic Ruthven Barracks (burned by the last remaining 3,000 Jacobite soldiers before they fled the impending persecution by Butcher Cumberland). On this day there was a mini herd of four white horses and another separate mini-herd of darker horses, which didn't seem to mix with each other, thus giving shots of white horses with the ruins in the backdrop, or conversely dark horses. Hopefully the castle-like barracks will be there if you stop, but I can't promise you'll have a herd of beautiful horses, nor the sunny afternoon that we had.
