Entry into Yellowstone National Park through Montana was closed until 1 June. We took our first trip yesterday, 5 June, finding the crowds light and travel very pleasant. Elk cows generally keep their calves hidden while they graze. Several cows stay around Mammoth Hot Springs and the nearby visitor center and homes for Rangers and park workers. This cow hid her calf under the black stairs on the left side of the photo. We were lucky enough to watch it come out for a quick meal before returning to its hiding place. These are still wild elk; the cows are very protective. Rangers were careful to keep observers at a safe distance.
