In 1665 the plague arrived in Eyam, brought to the village in a bolt of cloth. The villagers, led by William Mompesson, their vicar, sealed off the village from the surrounding countryside thus avoiding the spread of plague to others outside the village. By the time the plague finally abated in 1666 there had been 267 deaths recorded. The window has been place in the church to remember the events surrounding this terrible time in the history of Eyam.
