The Joseph Volokolamsk Monastery is located about 100 km NW from the center of Moscow. This male monastery, which is located near the village of Teryaevo, was founded in 1479. With the exception of the early XVI c refectory building, the extant monastery structures are late XVII c.
After 1917, the monastery was variously used as a children's home, a school, and a museum. The German army occupied the monastery during WW II. The monastery was revived in 1989 and received stavropegial status in 1999.
