Firework Drama
The fireworks took place in the bitter cold, to the dismay of many courtiers. The empress was persistent that Tzarevna in her frail condition not attend, as not to endanger the life of the future heir to the Russian throne.
In a rare moment, her son Tzarevich Pavel defended his wife, wishing to attend the fireworks with her. To avoid public quarrel, the Empress chose to ignore him and leave with the entourage.
Upon the beginning of fireworks, the Empress forced her son to give up his chair to his wife, as to publicly humiliate him. Embarrassed yet again by his mother, Tzarevich angrily retired to his apartments for the night.
