The Sun Rises on Cape Horn
The Sun rises over Cape Horn, the southernmost headland of the Tierra del Fuego archipelago of southern Chile. It is where sailing ships rounded the Horn for years carrying trade around the world prior to the construction of the Panama Canal. It is infamous for strong winds, large waves, strong currents and icebergs, and there have been many shipwrecks and lives lost here over the years. Rogue waves have been known to exceed 100 feet. We were lucky to have calm seas and mild winds during the several hours we spent here before departing for Antarctica.
The Name Cape Horn comes not from the shape of the island, but from the Dutch city of Hoorn.
I'll be gone for just a few days, but I'll try to check in.
