The Elephant Parade

A group of Elephants marches in an orderly column toward the waterhole for an afternoon drink in Hwange National Park. Elephants are very social animals and have tight family and group organization.

Hwange is home to a very large number of elephants, estimated to be around 40,000. Unfortunately, it is also home to a large number of poachers. It is estimated that around 500 have been killed by cyanide poisoning of the salt licks and waterholes over the last 5 months. There have been numerous articles in the news about this problem, starting right after I returned home. Here's one link.
