The Royal York Cresent at Clifton,the construction of the Georgian terrace was started in 1791,but due to bankruptcy of the promoter was brought to a standstill. In 1801 the unfinished part of the cresent was bought by the Government intended to build barracks. Local opposition frustrated this plan and the Crescent was completed in 1820 as originally planned.
