Judith Jamison

Welcome to #LisaDurden’s #WomensHistoryMonthMoment: Judith Jamison, born May 10, 1943, is an American dancer and choreographer, who made her premiere at #AlvinAileyAmericanDanceTheater in 1965. She toured for 13 years with the company and is best known for dancing in Alvin Ailey’s renowned works including Blues Suite, Revelations and her famous 1971 solo Cry, a 15-minute piece depicting the struggles of black women, choreographed expressly for her; it became her signature piece. Throughout #JudithJamison’s dance career, she performed all over the world as a guest artist with the #CullbergBallet, #SwedishRoyalBallet, #SanFranciscoBallet and danced alongside legend #MikhailBaryshnikov. #ClapForThat!! Upon #AlvinAiley’s death, on December 1, 1989, Jamison assumed the role of Artistic Director and dedicated the next 21 years of her life to the company’s success and in 2011, appointed #RobertBattle the Artistic Director Designate.
