Diving Merg

I understand that by sharing this story I condemn myself to birding geekdom for the rest of my time on this planet and accept the fact willingly.

 

I had tried in vain, for hours, to capture a good shot of this Red-breasted Merganser diving. I would shoot, look at the review screen, frown and then wait and shoot again. I was certain the conditions were too difficult to get the right combination of shutter speed and ISO for the shot I wanted.

 

But when I got home and looked at the shots I realized that in this one capture I could see his head under water. I thought that was pretty cool! Like really, really cool. I even did the cool surprise photo dance as I called to Cindy to come see it. She once more gave me that look of "I am living with a mad man" and walked away.

 

It is not the best shot. Too much implied motion and not enough focus. But at least I know I can do it. Now I just need to work on taking the shot in better light so that I can shoot at a lower ISO and faster shutter speed next time
