Chile Railways - Ferrocarril Caldera-Copiapó (Copiapo & Caldera Railway) - 4-4-0 steam locomotive (Kitson Locomotive Works, Leeds 1860)

Several 4-4-0s were built for the Copiapo Railway in Chile in 1858-60. They were Kitson 635-8 (1858) and 761 (1860). They became Nrs. 9-12 and 13 and were named G. WHEELRIGHT, DIEGO CARVALLO, JOSÉ M. MONTT, DOMINGO VEGA and MANUEL CARRIL

Kitson's earliest bogie locomotives were built for service in Chile, with eight-wheeled double bogie tenders. They had an American-type large cab. The locomotive above had horizontal cylinders, a large conical chimney with spark arrester, and a highly ornamental balustrade around the locomotive. Curiously, this was repeated also in the case of the steam locomotives that were operated in Russia. A set of railings was placed around the outside of the running platforms. Introduced by an Imperial decree in 1870, their purpose was to give protection to the crew from falling off the slippery surfaces when iced over, a thoughtfulness towards the workers hardly typical of Tsarist times. These railings remained on the locomotives to which they were fitted until the end of steam, but their application was discontinued after 1928 on the larger American-type locomotives of the Stalin era
