Hedjaz Railway - Jewish workers laying oil pipelines of the Iraq Petroleum Company near Naharayim in 1933

One of the three La Meuse 0-10-0T steam locomotives that were built for the Hedjaz Railway in 1914 (road numbers 2432/5/6) is seen in the background of this photo from 1933.

Naharayim, meaning "two rivers" in Hebrew, was the site of an important hydro-electric power station, in the northern Jordan Valley. Powered by the running waters of the Jordan and Yarmuk rivers, Naharayim remained in service between 1932 and 1948. It was taken over by Iraqi and Jordanian militants, who looted and destroyed it completely. The power station was eventually abandoned, along with the entire Hedjaz Railway line between Haifa and Damascus.
