Boynton Beach Memoir

South Lake Worth Inlet

Palm Beach County, Florida

Another long exposure of the turbulence following a powerful nor'easter that slammed the U.S. northeast a few days prior.

I've been looking for alternatives to the Nik Collection of digital filters ever since Google dropped support for them and macOS High Sierra broke their usage as filters in Photoshop smart objects. DxO has since picked them up, and reports to have updates out in 2018. In the meantime, Skylum's Tonality for B&W processing (used here) looks to be a good substitute for Silver Efex Pro. Their Luminar 2018 product is also quite nice; I used it here to add the bird as a layer from a prior shot I took to help compose and meter this one. Also used here is DxO's FilmPack 5 to replicate the look of Agfa Precisa 100 film (one of many presets in this tool). Finally, (initially actually) I used Topaz InFocus for sharpening.

Analog filters: landscape polarizer, 15-stop ND

Digital filters: Topaz InFocous, Skylum Tonality and Luminar 2018, DxO FilmPack 5 (all used as smart filters in Photoshop via Lightroom, and available for free trial)

Bird shot: 30 mm, ISO 100, f/8.0, 1/200 sec
