Streaking on the 4th of July

Warren Upper Reservoir

Rehoboth, Massachusetts

A remarkably long exposure of an otherwise unremarkable composition.

No fireworks were required around here this year, as Mother Nature put on a free show. I could see there might be good color and cloud streaks, but the scene was evolving very, very slowly. So I took a chance on an ultra-long exposure (24 minutes). It wasn't hot but I figured there would be lots of sensor noise; so I turned on long exposure noise reduction, which added another 24 minutes to the (in-camera) processing time (the job was still processing when I got home---10 minutes away---and unpacked the camera!). I was floored by how clean the image was; I counted very few hot pixels. Remarkable. I did touch the sliders a tad, but the final image is not too far off the original.

Filters: Gold-N-Blue polarizer, 2-stop soft-edge GND, 10-stop ND.
