The Grasshopper-The Prairie Pruner
The grasshopper is important to the prairie in that its eating habits help prune against overgrowth of plants. the grasshopper's strong jaws are able to eat through stems and and leaves, this thins the prairie so native plants are able to thrive. The grasshopper also loves to eat dandelions which help with the prairies weed control. The female grasshopper also aids in the success of the prairie. When she lays her eggs, she aerates the prairies soil by digging holes in which to lay her eggs. These holes allow water to filtrate into the soil.
