Tattered Last Rose of the Season

Fiesta climbing rose on my backyard fence trellis. I planted this cultivar last year and it has already reached the top of my six foot privacy fence.

Roses can be astonishingly hardy in the Texas soil and climate. My home is situated at the summit of a hill in the Texas Hill Country. Less than an inch of soil covers the broken limestone rock.

We don't get a lot of rain but we have plenty of drainage. The summer heat is intolerable, the soil is poor and lacking in organic deposits and it has no hint of acidity. Nevertheless, the hardier rose varieties thrive. A few companies have harvested rose cuttings from pioneer settler graveyards and sell them to the public!
