Comanche Moon in October

The full moon in a cloudless sky was known as "Comanche Moon" among the settlements of Texas. Emma Murck was a journalist and the daughter of a police commissioner of Barmen. The men of the settlement were chasing down strayed cattle when the Comanche attacked homesteads in the Central Texas region. The German Freidankers (free-thinkers) were known to practice target shooting on the Sabbath instead of attending church services.

On this occasion the custom was worthwhile. My g-g-grandmother fired with deadly accuracy while her young children molded bullets for the rifle in the fireplace. All residents of the homestead survived the encounter. I might add that the German immigrants had a wonderful efficiency for producing masterful examples of muzzle-loading rifles.
