Widow skimmer male

Adult male widow skimmer (Libellula luctuosa) perched by the Chesapeake & Ohio Canal, just beyond Lock 21 in Montgomery County, Maryland, USA. In motion, these dragonflies skim the canal so quickly that it's difficult to see them. But when they pause to rest, they are exquisite.
