Roman 'Unguentarium' perfume bottle

A small terracotta bottle for perfume etc. It is under 3" high. Originally it would have been painted. You can still see vestiges of paint.

It was found by a relative on a bomb site in London. He took it to the British Museum , who identified it as Roman, from the 1st or 2nd century AD .

Many delicate decorated glass unguentaria have been found .But this one is quite heavy and solid for its size and may have been robust packaging, with less likelyhood of breakage, and buyers not realising how little perfume it actually contains.

Whats also interesting (to me anyway) is the base is quite convex , as if the maker never expected buyers to have a smooth level surface available. . Or to make it more tactile for carrying with you when you go out.

Maybe it was perfume sold by 'Jean-Paul the Gaul' before he changed his name to Jean-Paul Gaultier.😃

Or " The Londinium look" by Rimmel.
