Some say “good things come in small packages”, the IBM Model M would like a word...

This is a thing of absolute beauty, and for many is the physical embodiment of “90s Keyboards”. I don't think I'll have too much to say in this write up, as the board mostly speaks for itself (both literally and figuratively). If you want a good rundown on the history of the Model M, (www.youtube.com/watch?v=D7wmMZmMinM) give this a watch.

From top to bottom, this Model M is completely stock, I've cleaned it up, but outside of that there's nothing that I would want to change. This will be a relic from a bygone era more than a daily driver; it is still worth noting the board functions without a hitch, just needs to be used with a USB to PS/2 adapter.

The buckling spring switches that are feature in this board were popularised by several IBM keyboards, most notably the Model F and Model M. The name stems from the way the spring in the switch “buckles” on the downstroke producing that sweet, sweet “click” and really nice tactile feedback. Yes these are loud, and yes they might not be suitable for classroom or modern work environments, but damn is it a joy to type on.

The overall construction of the board is second to none. It features a super thick ABS plastic case, a hefty steel backplate, a pretty standard membrane circuit board, and the chunky as all hell two-piece keycaps. Throw it altogether, and I'm sure that if one was so inclined, you could quite easily kill someone with one of these.

It was these boards that led me to r/modelmbirthdays, (this is where I get super nerdy) and I would love nothing more that to get my hands on a Model M dated 28 March 1994. That, would be the ultimate keyboard flex. But hey each to their own.

And with that, I think that concludes the “vintage” or vintage inspired board that I own.
