December

Out of probably 100,000 slides I shot over the years this is one of my favorites for a number of reasons. This is train 911 at Garnet in December 1985. After the COFC business was rerouted across lower MI in August 85 trains 909/910 were annulled east of Gladstone and trains 911/912 had there schedule changed so that 912 passed through Trout Lake about 5AM and 911 would be called a Soo Yard on that crews rest. Normally 911 wouldn't depart Soo Yard until nearly dark, especially in the short daylight winter days. That effectively eliminated most of my local photography. Anyway for some reason this 911 fell way off schedule and it departed Trout Lake at about 1PM and I was able to shoot it multiple times as it worked west. There were a ton of clouds around and the sun was in and out like crazy but everything really came together in my mind on this shot at Garnet as a pair of SD's lead a GP38-2 and 55 cars west at 40mph. Next day back to the same schedule and most of my winters photography was over in the Trout Lake area. You have to love the Soo colors in the snow and the sweet December light!
