CNJ 1554 at Nesquehoning
CNJ RS3 #1554 was built in Schenectady in 1953. It escaped life on Conrail as it was purchased by the Black River and Western in 1975.
By 1984, the unit was out of service and was purchased by the NRHS Hawk Mountain Chapter. In the summer of 1985, the restored 1554 was the star of the show at her coming out event.
Here in 1985 the 1554 is running short trips out of Jim Thorpe towards Nesquehoning on home CNJ rails using Rail Tours coaches. The plan was for it to power an excursion to the Hometown Bridge, but a washout past Nesquehoning made it impossible this day. This shot in Nesquehoning was taken at the farthest point west that the trips would run.
The unit was only operational for a few years after 1985. After languishing out of service at Jim Thorpe, it was purchased by the Anthracite RR Historical Society in 1995. Today, it is again restored and operational on the Delaware Lackawanna. The DL re-engined the unit and the old prime mover was part of the ALCO museum in Schenectady.
