The Beak of the Duck?

This is part of the undercut rim that appears to run around pretty much all of the Head lobe. How did it form? This image suggests it is due to the buckling of the harder outer crust of the comet as it slowly shinks internally as mass is lost by sublimation. This may be a remnant of a harder, more refractory layer, formed during a previous cometary resurfacing episode.

The material seen on the underside does not have the aggregate appearance of a deposition type formation and perhaps it can be conluded this is older comet material once laid down by a more homogeneous fluid "lava" flow, thrust up through the upper surface by some type of tetonic activity.

This is not an erosion scarp either, the buttresses and uneveness of the surface profile suggest. less vigourous sublimation erosion and dust scouring has taken place. The limited amount of transportable dust at the base of the face limits this process. The features in front of it are jagged and angular as if this may be what is left of a previous intrusion through the surface.

The large amount of large boulders and extensive rubble field suggest erosion in this area is due more to thermal shock from the daily and orbital heat cycles.
