Castle Reuversweerd dates from 1830 and is built in Empire style. Until 1933 it was well known for its stud farm. Baron Sytzama purchased the estate in 1941 but shortly thereafter the castle was occupied by the Germans who used it as a level transmittingstation. At the end of worldwar II the Canadians attacked the castle and damaged the exterior of the castle. During the same time Baron Sytzama was executed by the Dutch SS.
Since 1945 castle Reuversweerd is abandoned by the family Sytzama and they built a new farmhouse next to it. The castle itself was sealed and left to decay. There are two theories about the reason why the family abandoned Reuversweerd. One is that the costs of renovation were too high. The other theory is that after the Baron was executed the grieving widow ordered the castle to be sealed and stated that nobody was ever allowed to enter the building. Since then the castle has the reputation of being haunted. Some say the clock in the facade stopped at the moment Baron Sytzama was executed but when I look at the pictures I took it appears still to be running...
