22nd February 2025. Fireplace marbles of Muses, at Hardwick Hall, Doe Lea, Chesterfield, Derbyshire.
A property owned by the National Trust, built in the late sixteenth century for Elizabeth of Shrewsbury, (ES on the finials), known as Bess of Hardwick. Bess was probably the second lady of the kingdom, after Elizabeth I. Bess was labelled as pretentious, see the lavish furnishings, tapestries and carvings, often with crowns, and other symbols of "royalty". Along with her husband, she was responsible for Mary, Queen of Scots after Mary's capture, and before her execution, but Mary was in fact executed before Hardwick Hall was built, and she was never imprisoned here.
