RIP?
The tree at Sycamore Gap on Hadrian's Wall was deliberately cut down with a chainsaw by a 16 year old in the early hours of Thursday 28th September 2023. A 60 year old man has now been arrested and is being held for enquiries relating to this act.
This picture was taken in July 2014.
What can possibly be said about this happening. I wonder if we will ever hear from the perpetrators about the reasons for their actions. What could possibly have inspired the action? Who helped in the planning and execution?
Aims? Objectives? Aspirations? Results?
Was this a scream from one generation about the crimes committed by another? Or was it just a mindless, meaningless act of vandalism? I am not trying to justify the action. It has appalled me, but I would like to know why.
In the media this morning there was mention of the fact that the tree may not be dead, and could grow again from the stump. It will surely become a symbol for the future, but in a different way to the one of it being a symbol for the past.
