Castlefield Canal Basin, Manchester

Three railway bridges and one footbridge across the basin. These bridges are real works of industrial art. The three huge bridges at the top of the shot carry rail lines into and through Manchester. The central one carries the Metrolink Tram artery with links to Altrincham, Bury, Eccles, Didsbury, the Airport, Oldham, Rochdale and Ashton-under-Lyne. A new link to Trafford Park will open soon. The bridges to either side of this one carry main line rail services to the rest of the country. The canal basin sits on the Bridgewater Canal, and was the original hub for the transport networks in Georgian and Victorian times. The canals were the first industrial highways of the industrial revolution. This area of Castlefield has changed considerably in recent years. It was formerly a manufacturing centre full of mills and factories, and tenements which housed the working classes. It is now becoming a leisure and retail hub, and within a short distance of this spot are all of the trappings of a modern leisure centre. Shops, cafes, restaurants, gyms, museums and art galleries, cinema, concert hall, theatres, etc etc.
