Gratuities Accepted

When compared to the situation as recently as 2-years ago, the sight of a coal train in South Wales has become quite a novelty; one of the few regular workings is the twice-weekly service to Immingham from Onllwyn, usually running on Tuesdays and Thursdays. This image was taken on 18 January 2018 and it shows EWS-liveried Class 66 numbered 66186 with the early-running 6E09, the 13.54 departure bound for Immingham with a load of 20-HTAs (if I counted correctly!), it is about to pass the site of Onllwyn station (closed 1962), this is the only remaining section of the Neath to Brecon line.

As with many locations in South Wales, collieries abounded for many years, I am stood on what was known as 'Khartoum Tip' and it was formed of spoil from Onllwyn No. 1 Colliery (closed 1964), in 2008 the tip was reseeded and planted to become a 'natural beauty spot' and the views of the wild countryside are marvellous.
