Swaledale - land of the barns

Taken just outside Thwaite looking East down the valley.

The seventeenth and early eighteenth century saw a revolution in farm buildings. An increase in prosperity made it possible to convert drafty wooden barns into sturdy stone built structures for animal shelter and crop storage. This landscape demonstrates the shift from wood to stone.
