Matterdale Church

A document resides in the safe keeping of this church that tells of its origins, it is a rather wonderful document and shows that this is truly a people's church.

As was usual with a chapelry this church has no dedication.

In 1566 the locals were tired of the long trek to Greystoke, their nearest church, and petitioned the authorities for a church of their own. A humble chapelry was granted for prayer but not for the sacraments, Greystoke was the place to go for burial, marriage and Christening. They petitioned again in 1580 and explained the problems they uncounted making the long journey in inclement weather. This time they were granted the right to perform the rituals of the church. This wonderful, very simple building is testament to their faith and determination.
