My great grandfather James Wallace (1859-1952)

The photographer's stamp visible just below great granddad's pocket handkerchief reads; Livermore, Cornmarket, Halifax. James' parents married in Halifax in 1853 when his father Charles was travelling round the north as a professional vocalist. After a marriage to my great grandmother Alice Jane in Sheffield in 1887 that produced 3 children including my maternal grandmother Elsie and at least one affair which produced another child adopted into the family after the tragic early death from TB in 1909 of James' lover, (who was also sometimes the family's landlady), James returned to Halifax to commit bigamy with another Alice in 1924, calling himself "James Maitland Wallace", falsifying his age and father's name. It was another 9 years before the first Alice died! James himself lived to the ripe age of 92 and died peacefully at the home of his eldest daughter in 1952.
