My great aunt Emily Mamwell, possibly aged 20 and in mourning for her father who died of apoplexy that year, in Norton Lees, Sheffield
Emily was born 20th October 1883 in Alexandra Road, Heeley, fourth daughter of cabinet maker and inventor Charles Mamwell, his first child with his second wife, my great grandmother Elizabeth Thompson Mamwell. Emily went to Brightside Girls School in the 1890s and worked as a seamstress and shirt maker for the Wholesale co-op. In later years she did piece work, sewing the shirts at home and then taking them to the factory, often working through the night to fulfill her quota. She died in 1955 at Conran Street, Harpurhey, Manchester.
