How to check if you are really in love with the right person

How to check if you are really in love with the right person

Do you remember that old song that goes “this is not a puppy love?” This applies to many people who think that they are truly in love with their latest crush – then eventually realize that what they thought was true love was actually just infatuation. The problem is, it can be difficult to figure out what you are feeling after the first date has gone very well, and you are still getting chills and thrills just remembering it. So how can you be sure that what you feel is really love?

Your first act when you think you are in love is to slow down before you do anything rash. For example, you might be so taken with this new person in your life that you offer out a spare key to your apartment. But taking that huge step could be a big mistake if you later realize that you are not that attracted to the other person after all, especially when you get to know them better and see the dark side of their personality. It’s sometimes better to take baby steps in any relationship so that you can be sure about yourself and the other person.

If you and your new love interest have any friends in common who you trust, you can bring up the topic of your new relationship with this common ally. This is a good way to vent your inner feelings, including those romantic feelings that crop up every time you think about the new object of your affection. This strategy is also good, because your close friend is not in love with the person you think you are in love with – hence, he or she can actually give a more objective perspective about what is happening. Your friend might also be able to point out possible hurdles to your relationship before you rush headlong into commitment.

Another option you might consider is putting down your thoughts and feelings in a private journal. No, diaries like this are not just for schoolgirls with a crush on the latest pop singer on TV. A private journal can help you clear your mind -- especially when your hormones seem to be dictating your actions. Write in your journal as often as you need to, and then take some time to look back over your previous entries. You might be surprised that what you first wrote down a week ago seems to differ from what you have written down today. If it seems that your feelings of “love” are tapering off, then you might just be infatuated with your date. This may mean that eventually you will fall “out of love” and will be looking for someone new.

However, there is always the possibility that you really are in love. If this is the case, then congratulations! Having someone new to love is always a milestone in any person’s life. You can feel free proceed further in the relationship until you figure out if this is the right person to invite to be your new life partner.
