In the Mist

Oftentimes when I take on a multi-day backpacking trip, I have a bad habit of keeping my head down and focusing on getting where I need to get. I often have to remind myself to look up and enjoy the special place I was so looking forward to seeing. I definitely kept up with that bad habit on this trip, though the park received a historic level of rain prior to my arrival, and all that rain made so many little streams swell from a tiny trickle to something that took time to find a place to cross. This stream, without the rain, may have been hardly noticeable. After a massive storm the night before, however, it was big enough to slow down my pace, and make me notice some incredible light and the twisting river leading up to it. Add to that the cloud breaking over some of the jagged peaks, and I was spellbound by the scene unfolding. What’s another 20 or 30 minutes to get where I was going anyway?
