Ripples
If you read the captions to my images with any frequency, you’ll know that my favourite light is probably surprise light. This was a morning where we had that light in spades!
I posted an image a little while ago of some ice cracks and clouds revealing mountains. This image was from the same morning. Again, that morning started with being completely overcast and with no defining light at all - until it wasn’t. Before the magic light adventure began, a friend and I had largely packed up and were making our way back to the car while another friend took a bit more time to close up shop. He was tinkering with a composition looking at ripples in the ice and how they worked with the background.
Scott - “are you almost ready to go?”
Eric - “Yep, just checking to see if this works” (looking at his composition with ice ripples)
Eric - “Oh yeah - this works”
Scott and I - looking at his composition while the overcast sky began to clear, letting through beautiful light in all directions
All of us have a quick look at each other - no words, but the message was clear.
It was at this moment we all scattered like frightened racoons as new compositions opened up everywhere. I shot that previous ice crack image first as snow started to cover the ice, but as Eric demonstrated, the snow accumulation on these ripples actually helped to create some depth. As the snow built up, we all worked on images leaning on these ripples.
So I think I have to thank Eric for this image - if it wasn’t for his tardiness, I would have been at the AirBnB frying eggs rather than photographing scenes like this. Thanks Eric!
And thank YOU for reading!
