dung fly (Scathophaga furcata) at Clear Creek WMA IA 653A2019

If you want to find a dung fly, look no further than the nearest cow pasture and check out the fresh cow pies there. At least here in the Driftless region, I can always count on a few female dung flies hanging around to lay their eggs in those nice soft patties on a sunny warm spring day. Larval dung flies delight in eating that delicious dung on the way to becoming adults. I can find these adult dung flies feeding on dung, fermenting tree sap or flower nectar out in the field.
