sandhill crane at Pool Slough IA 653A8447

I went on a wild smew chase this morning, checking out a report from yesterday about a smew being sighted on the Mississippi River in my area. After freezing my face in a cold stiff breeze for two hours, fruitlessly scoping hundreds of lesser scaup, common goldeneyes, canvasbacks and other assorted diving and puddle ducks, I gave up since the smew was probably halfway back to Siberia by now. Luckily, one of my favorite birding spots was nearby and it wasn't a totally wasted day when this cooperative sandhill crane came strolling by.
