Hygrophorus subsalmonius at Lake Meyer Park IA 854A6149

Mushrooms don't come any stickier than these colorful slime-balls. Notice the very viscous caps that are glistening from that gelatinous "glue". These are about the last mushrooms to appear in the woods around here. Find them fruiting around shagbark hickory trees after the first frost. They don't have any common name that I'm aware of and the few books that mention them say they're edible. I've sampled them in past years, and with this year's bumper crop I cooked up a big batch tonight. Even though I washed them vigorously to remove as much slime as possible before cooking, they still went down like raw oysters. Otherwise, they tasted OK.
