The objective
A view of Stirling Castle from the Borestone, the site of the Scot’s camp and Robert the Bruce’s command post at the Battle of Bannockburn in 1314. The relief of a siege of the castle was the English army’s objective in that campaign. The castle commanded a strategic position in Central Scotland being, until the early 20th century, the first major crossing over the River Forth and safe route over Flander’s Moss, a large waterlogged bog stretching westwards, The castle is somewhat different to that of the 14th Century especially with regard to the Great Hall (the large, white building) which wasn’t built until the 16th century.
