SUIT YOURSELF
Here’s another de-boxed Darci fashion! - the very peasant-y ‘Suit Yourself’ … This is a favourite of mine as I remember this actually being quite a big look in the late 70s, both figuratively and literally! Those big voluminous sleeves and those sweeping mid-calf skirts made quite a statement- especially with those really cool modified ‘cowboy’ boots! I also love the touches of dusky suede in that obi-wrap belt and that vest.
These sets of photos are my ode to my favourite photographer when I was a fashion student, the late Bill King. He’s pretty much forgotten now, but he was one of the leading fashion photographers at all the international editions of Harper’s Bazaar throughout the 60s and 70s, and was really prolific in all the international editions of Elle and Vogue and the U.S. magazine Mademoiselle throughout the 80’s, until his death in 1987. He also shot all the ads for Italian label Enrico Coveri in the mid 80’s. (Go google his work, there is some of it online, but sadly not a lot…) This look is very reminiscent of his work for Harper’s Bazaar from the late 70’s, with lots of movement and the massive wind machines he would always use in his studio. I used a large stand-alone fan to blow Darci’s hair and skirt here, and it was interesting to experiment with that. If you want see some very rare footage of Bill King working, here’s a link to a (rather cheesy and dated!) video documentary… Skip to about 11:30 mins to see him photographing the beautiful 70’s model Christina Ferrare (who this brunette Darci reminds me very much of!) www.youtube.com/watch?v=0eMPf4xb3hw&list=FLVexMVP5opE...
