POLLY By Valentine
Even though I sometimes collect Barbie’s ‘competitors’ like Tressy and Tuesday Taylor, I usually don’t collect ‘clones’. There is one however, that always tugged at my heartstrings with her sad, worried face… and that was Polly, made by Valentine dolls in the early 1960’s (she was made by other companies for decades afterward) but the original was the one I was after, with the heart and arrow logo on her back. I especially love this one as she still has her original lips in a beautiful strawberry red colour and all her cheek blush. She also has an oversized white ‘reflector’ dot in one eye that looks like a tear that is about to roll down her cheek! She looks as if she knows that Barbie is always going to score all the best modelling jobs, (though she thinks Ken is a bit of drip so she’s not jealous of that! LOL)
She DOES however have one spectacular black satin and chiffon ‘Dior–ish’ cocktail dress that Barbie could only dream of owning (Though she may steal it from Polly to wear in a future pic!) Polly also came with some of her original outfits, including these fab leopard Capri pants, (which is one of the other big reasons I wanted this lot!) and leopard trimmed top. She is borrowing Barbie’s jacket, belt, eyeglasses and shoes. I also gave her a ‘Barbie-ish’ ponytail which is close to the original ponytail hairstyle she had, as her hair was in a bit of a state. It’s like she is always thinking ‘What does Barbie have that I haven’t got?’ I can definitely relate to this gal more than any of my other dolls, as I definitely know how she feels!!!
