Carpi est détachée en 1336 du marquisat de Modène pour former une seigneurie indépendante, gouvernée par la Maison Pio de Savoie. Puis elle fut rattachée au duché d'Este de Modène en 1527.
Carpi was a medieval village of prehistoric Villanovan origin that was probably rebuilt as a fortress (castrum Carpi) in the High Middle Ages.
In 1336, Carpi was detached from the Marquisate of Modena to form an independent seigniory, governed by the House of Pio of Savoy. It then became part of the Este Duchy of Modena in 1527.
