Seconde capitale de Sri Lanka après la destruction d'Anuradhapura en 993, Polonnaruwa comprend, à côté des monuments brahmaniques élevés par les Cholas, les restes monumentaux de la fabuleuse cité-jardin créée au XIIe siècle par Parakramabahu le Grand.
Ce palais, bâti par Parakrama Bahu comptait 7 étages et 1000 pièces, reposant sur plusieurs centaines de piliers peints, rayonnants de motifs de fleur et de plantes grimpantes. Il fût détruit par un incendie, seuls deux étages de cette magnifique demeure ont échappé au flammes. Tout autour, les maisons des serviteurs.

This palace, built by Parakrama Bahu had 7 floors and 1000 rooms, resting on several hundred painted pillars, radiating flower motifs and climbing plants. It was destroyed by a fire, only two floors of this magnificent residence escaped the flames. All around, the servants' houses.
