Eugène Guillaume, auteur de cette statue grandeur nature, est un artiste officiel du Second Empire qui s’est distingué par sa maîtrise du néoclassicisme commandée par le prince Napoléon (1822-1891), fils de Jérôme Bonaparte.
Le prince avait fait construire par l’architecte Alfred-Nicolas Normand (1822-1909), au 18 avenue Montaigne, une demeure imitée des villas antiques et connue sous le nom de maison pompéienne. Il avait commandé pour l’atrium de cette dernière une statue en pied de Napoléon Ier figurant l’Empereur en toge tenant le Code civil, la tête laurée, un aigle à ses pieds. L’œuvre présentée ici est le plâtre original de cette statue en marbre blanc, commandée sans doute avant 1859. (Cette statue est en dépôt au musée d'Orsay)

The prince had the architect Alfred-Nicolas Normand (1822-1909) build a residence at 18 avenue Montaigne, imitating the villas of antiquity and known as the Pompeian house. For the atrium of the latter, he commissioned a full-length statue of Napoleon I, showing the Emperor in a toga holding the Civil Code, his head laurelled, an eagle at his feet. The work presented here is the original plaster cast of this white marble statue, probably commissioned before 1859.
