Venice - San Marco's (Tympanum)

St Mark's is a structure of mingled Byzantine and Western style, built from 1063 to 1073 to shelter the tomb of the Evangelist Mark. Changes were made at the time of the Renaissance and in the 17th century. Despite the great variety of styles (Byzantine, Romanesque, Gothic and Renaissance) the outcome is a unified and harmonious ensemble. The rich decoration of marbles and mosaics on gilded backgrounds is magnificent and has earned the basilica the name of the golden church. It was built on the plan of a Greek cross, surmounted by a bulbous dome flanked by four smaller domes of unequal height placed on the arms of the cross.

The tympanum above the main entrance is a beautiful mosaic depicting Chirst's ascension.
