White-fringed weevil (Naupactus leucoloma)

A introduced species of broad-nosed weevil from South America, now widely distributed throughout New Zealand. It is considered a significant pest species. Adults chew the leaf margins of a wide range of broadleaf plants, and can completely ring bark young grape vines, which usually don't recover or become severely compromised and open to infection from fungi. The larval stage is the most damaging as they feed on the roots and underground stems of a variety of plants, preferring legumes. They also chew holes or shallow channels in potato tubers.
