Internet Now! project,Gulu

Creating employment and information access through ICT, Internet Now! is an Oxfam project seeking to improve people’s lives across Northern Uganda. Developed and implemented together with 3 project partners - Arid Lands Information Network (ALIN), Inveneo and Samasource, Internet Now! helps generate income and creates employment for the communities. This is through a social enterprise called SINFA Uganda Ltd (SINFA). When completed, the network will have 100 centres and will cover 9 districts in Northern Uganda (Gulu, Amuru, Adjumani, Moyo, Kitgum, Pader, Lamwo Nwoya and Agago). SINFA is providing income generating services in the centres, such as employment through micro work, a specialised form of business process outsourcing where a large task is broken down into smaller tasks to be completed by the micro workers like image tagging. The centres also will give access to an agricultural commodity platform, and other services, all driven by specially designed information technology.

Currently the project has established 21 centres (One Super Centre and 20 Standard Centres), with a total 270 workstations. These centres are established across five northern Uganda districts. Since microwork started in November 2012, over 300 students and community members have been employed both at the Super Centre as well as at Standard Centres which have been opened in the communities.

By 2015, SINFA is expected to run independently as a viable for-profit social enterprise. This groundbreaking and innovative project has been realised through the generous funding received from the Dutch National Postcode Lottery’s Dream Fund.
